I started this blog one year ago today. I'm having a hard time getting into the swing of things today, so I thought I'd take a few pixels and look back. That first day I described this blog as existing "where science, public policy, obscure cultural items, and my own (surprisingly bizarre) personal life come together." Since then I think it's been all that and a little more.
I began very early in the morning the first day, with a big heaping plateful of bitterness. I suppose some of that attitude has carried through, but I hope not too much. Grad students love to bitch about our lives, but the fact is I'm doing what I love (science) and being paid for it. It is, as my father would say, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
It took me a while to get the hang of this whole blogging thing. In the beginning, there were lots of F-bomb laden screeds and cheesy fiskings of the local student newspaper. There were stupid meme ideas, lame nicknames and lots of annoying obsessing over readership statistics. There were weird, overly literal posts about breakfast foods. And there were lots and lots of the pretentious, the-world-needs-my-advice posts that are so common to all the most annoying Internet backwaters.
After the initial hitches, I think I started to find my giddyup. Readers of this blog, I think, have a pretty good feel for who I am (if a slightly skewed impression of the amount of time I spend pondering political issues). Y'all have seen me be both deeply religious and casually blasphemous. You've read serious thoughts about thermodynamics and stupid jokes about masturbation. You've seen my tendency to obsess over irrelevant bullshit and ignore the issues of our day. You're aware of my status and my ambitions. In short, you've gotten a 100,000-word peek inside my conflicted, zillion-RPM brain. I hope it hasn't scared you too much.
Oh, and I wrote about hybrid cars, too.
As I start a shiny new blogging year, there are lots of exciting things going on. You will, if you stick around, have a front row seat to one of the most exciting times of my life: my final year of grad school, my defense and (hopefully) hooding, and my long-delayed transition to nonacademic life. All that, and another season of football, too! How can you go wrong?

Regarding Hybrid Cars - Check out the gas savings calculator at MixedPower.com to see how much you can save with a hybrid vehicle. Most people are prety surprised at how quickly you recoup the "extra" cost, especially with rising gas prices.
If you are interested in Hybrid vehicles there is a lot more information there as well.
Cheers!
I appreciate you coming by, Father. On the subject of hybrid cars, though, boy --- are you ever barking up the wrong tree.
Congratulations one making it a year!
